Odyssey of the Mind: The Epic Quest

Way to go, Tigers!

The Problem: Create an epic poem that details a team-created quest that is acted out in the performance. The characters must encounter an original beast, rescue someone, and overcome an epic challenge using colors to depict different settings.

Synopsis of the team’s solution to Problem 3:

A knight, a shark and pirate team up to rescue a queen who has been captured by a turtle-whale monster. After their ship is destroyed by the beast, the rescuers and the queen come up with a creative solution to get back to the castle.

Team Members and their roles in the performance—all third graders:
Caden Nall: the pirate, because he can make pirate voice sounds
Jackson McKee: the beast, because he is able to make his voice deep and scary
Evelyn Smith: the narrator because she articulates well and is good at remembering lines
Mackensize Braud: the shark, because “Sharkenzie” sounded best and it fits her personality
Lukas von Eichel-Streiber: sound effects because he is creative and can quickly switch from one to another
Clay Carruthers: the knight, because it fits his personality well
Claire Vandenbrand: the queen because she has a queen voice and vibe, and knows how to sew a queen costume.

A moment when they had to improvise during the regional contest: “When the judges said we could not use the fog machine, we had to pretend it was spooky and scary, but it was fine,” said Evelyn Smith.

What have you learned being part of an OM team? “I learned that I'm actually good at hot gluing,” said Mackensie Braud. “I also realize that working with boys is harder than I thought --they can be kind of crazy.”

The Frostwood Problem 3 team coach, Charlotte Nall, noted that over the course of the school year, the boys and girls have worked hard to become one team. “I am SO PROUD of them for learning how to work with each other,” she said. “They have learned to respect each other and their ideas, and no matter what happens at state, I am so proud of their teamwork!”
