Hello! My name is Lilya and today I will be telling you about Syria.
Syria is a small and beautiful country on the Mediterranean Sea, the capital and largest city is Damascus (the city of Jasmine), which is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.
The historic old city center of Damascus contains numerous archaeological sites including some historical mosques and churches. The population of Syria is around 18.40 million people and Syria’s official language is Arabic.
Aram is a region mentioned in the Bible located in central Syria where the ancient Christian mountain town of Maaloula is still standing and its people still speak Aramaic (Jesus’s language).
Syria has lots of ancient artifacts and ruins, like the ones found in the cities of Palmyra and Bosra which was once the capital of the Roman province of Arabia. When Bosra became a part of the Roman empire it became a trading post where Arabian caravans would buy supplies for their long journeys; that’s why it was called Caravan City.
The Ugaritic script found in a Syrian City (Ugarit) engraved on clay tablets was one of the earliest evidences of ancient alphabets.
Unfortunately, since 2011 Syria has been battling an ongoing brutal civil war.
I hope you enjoyed learning about Syria.
